Showcase of Excellence

This week, House of Shine hosted a Personal Project Proposal Showcase for tenth grade students at Westlake Academy. This was a culminating event for the tenth grade What’s Your Shine curriculum that was implemented with the students this year.

Tenth grade students at Westlake Academy will spend the year carrying out an individual project on a topic that is of particular interest. As a culmination of the student’s experience in the Middle Years Programme, the intention of the Personal Project is for the student to demonstrate his or her ability to initiate, manage, and direct their own inquiry. Students will spend the academic year completing this Personal Project. The students used the House of Shine’s framework, called the Point of Intersection, when developing their proposal. Students were encouraged to identify a talent they possess, an interest they have, and a need they care about in the world around them. Each student then developed a Personal Project topic based on the intersection of their talent, interest, and need.

In partnership with Westlake Academy, the House of Shine hosted showcase event for students to display a summary of their proposed Personal Project. Local community members attended the event and provided insight, feedback, references, or recommendations to students by way of post-it notes on their proposed projects. The event served as a way for community members to see the talents and gifts of Westlake Academy students, but also for community members to provide guidance and support based on their expertise and networking in the community!
