A Birthday That Shines

Yesterday I had an opportunity to facilitate a StrengthsFinder workshop with a group of students, ages 11-17.

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon, so I knew I needed something extra to keep participants engaged in what we were doing.

I decided to frame the entire workshop as a birthday celebration, since one of House of Shine’s essential teachings explains that our unique combination of talents and gifts is woven into our DNA from birth .

Our party came complete with gift boxes tied in bright yellow ribbons; a paragraph-long description from the book, Colorstrology, featuring attributes of people born on your same birthday; and, inside the box, a customized packet revealing details associated with each participant’s Top Five Strengths.

Oh, and there were cupcakes, napkins, party hats, and confetti at each participant’s seat too.

I think it worked. Participants grasped the connection between their birthdays, the unique results from each of their StrengthsFinder surveys, and the idea that their strengths are actually a priceless gift (of which they must take very good care and cultivate their whole life).

On the way home, I had some post-birthday party thoughts:

First, we could also have played Pin the Tail on the Donkey. After all, finding a job or career that is a good fit can feel a lot like being spun around, while wearing blinders, and then being sent on your way to land in the perfect spot.

Second, what about a piñata? The messaging there works too. We don’t reap rewards or find our sweet spot until we’ve taken a few cracks at other things – sometimes missing the mark all together.

And third, Musical Chairs. There is no better way to illustrate the importance of believing in abundance than to get participants’ hearts racing with a game of Musical Chairs. No two of us are the same, so when we’re using our unique combination of talents and gifts, we realize there are enough seats for everyone. And the music will keep playing.

Now I’m excited to celebrate another one, so RSVP if you’d like House of Shine to come and facilitate this at your next birthday party.
