Freaking Scary, But Awesome
I had the chance to visit Spark! – a new kid's museum in downtown Dallas that recently opened.
This brilliant and inviting space was the brainchild of Beverly Davis, a woman reportedly tired of taking her niece to museums, only to then reprimand her for touching and climbing on exhibits. Modeled after a similar space in St. Louis, Beverly believed she could foster kids' creativity by providing space actually designed to be climbed on and touched.
So, she started a non-profit organization whose mission is to: “ignite the spark of creativity inherent in all children.” Then she got busy turning her mission into a vision and then finally into a 11,000 square foot facility.
One look at the place and it was immediately evident how much big thinking, risk taking, and relentless passion was behind the museum's grand opening.
There were architects
and who knows how many countless other people involved in turning this vision into a reality.
A favorite moment of my visit came at the very end the day. A little girl came flying down the roller coaster-like slide, suspended from the high in the sky of this former warehouse and exclaimed, “That was freaking scary, but awesome.”
Then I thought about Beverly and the journey she must have been on for the last few years while breathing life into this vision of hers and I smiled thinking to myself…
Freaking scary, but awesome!
