My birthday is today, but my real gift came about a week ago when I hosted what I'm calling a Reverse Birthday Party.
This year I decided the gift I needed more than anything else was time with my friends.
And a set of Shine plates. Each one bearing a Principle of Shine:
Use Your Strengths
Bring Out the Best in Others
Remember Little Things Matter
Be Relentlessly Passionate, and
And two more to round out my set of plates: Be*Do*Share and, of course, Shine.
The best part of the evening was not the personal bundt cakes at each person's seat or the yellow balloons. The best part of the evening was presenting each friend with a handwritten note, describing which Shine principle she most exemplified and, in turn, which plate she should paint for me at our local Paint Your Pottery place.
Writing those notes filled my soul and reminded me of why I am so excited to jump headlong into a new year. It's because the friendship I receive from these women all year long sustains me and is, in fact, the best most enduring gift of all.
The next best treat comes in a couple of weeks when the plates have been fired and I can show you the finished products.
