Which is it?

Which is it?

When trying to shine are we supposed to operate like well oiled machines

or

be nimble, because change is the only constant?

Or...

Is the key to shining knowing which to do when?

Saying No Just Got Easier

Saying "no" for a specific reason feels easier than saying "no" in the absence of a reason.

When you have $10.00 in your pocket and you must decide between lunch with a friend or gas for your car, the decision becomes one of needs and less about rejection of your friend.

No to lunch means yes to gas. Or vice versa.

The t.v. show The Biggest Loser hosted an episode weeks ago where one of the participants, Olivia, shared an aha moment. She said simply and earnestly, "I have learned that saying, 'no' to unhealthy food choices is saying 'yes' to me."

The simplicity of her message rang so true to me that I quickly ran and jotted it down in my Shine Journal.

Olivia trained herself to believe that saying "no" to a piece of birthday is not being a kill-joy at her friend's birthday celebration. Instead saying "no" to cake is saying, "yes" to herself.

The clarity of choosing between two distinct things is what made Olivia's statement so helpful and, therefore, so memorable.

No to lunch with a friend means yes to gas. The choice is between two distinct things and, therefore, the best decision is made more clear.

No to a slice of cake is, in turn is saying yes to a healthier, slimmer body. Again, the choice is between two distinct things and, therefore, the best decision becomes clearer.

Yesterday I took a three mile walk and it occurred to me...

No

wonder

more

people

don't

Shine.

We are surrounded with messages about limitations

and roadblocks

and warnings that we should know our place. That we should slow, stop, yield, keep out, and don't trespass.

What would we be capable of, if the messaging around us was different?
