Turning Lemons Into Lemonade

An unexpected trip home to Dallas, in the middle of our summer vacation, is the perfect reminder that, "when life hands you lemons, make lemonade." And, since lemons are yellow, today's lesson in Shining is even more perfect and timely.

It is true. Instead of waking up to sounds and smells of the ocean, our family hustled and bustled through airports so that we could return to land-locked Dallas for day number ten of temperatures over 100 degrees.

But...

That same unfortunate detour through Dallas also allowed me to:

Get ahead on a project.

Spend much-needed time with a partner talking through details of another project.

Arrange a play date for my son, while catching up with a friend.

Mail my father his birthday present on time

Squeeze in a date night with my husband and,

Sneak a short visit with a family member who happens to be visiting Dallas for three days.

How about you? Visit us in the Comment Section and tell us about your big, tall glass of lemonade.

Shining off until tomorrow when I will be coming to you - once again, from the Sunshine State.

So glad to be a part of the lemonade.

My most recent lemon probably centered around work and I think my lemonade has been that I'm becoming much more adept at taking ownership of and being in charge of my functional area.

    Hi ladies
It's been an insane summer with little boys and their activities. I've hardly been able to keep my head afloat and have been very lazy in commenting here.
My lemonade moment happened this week. I was supposed to go to a conference on Saturday. I was told that I had a sponsorship. Did tons of advertising from them but now I'm not registered.
But now I get to see Matthew swim the championship race on Saturday. He was sad that I couldn't go and now I can. It has been so amazing seeing Matthew suceeed this summer with swim team. With two team records and a bunch of wins, he's had a wonderful summer. Watching him in Saturday is much more important than a silly conference. So thanks conference people for losing my stuff. You let me support my son on his big day. Go Matthew

hmmm... well, am still working on the school thing.... it is not really lemons at this point, but I am making lemonade anyways, bc I can. If I cant get in to class right now, there are some other things I can do until Oct or Jan. When I thought I was going to start school yesterday, I was thinking about those things... so I am doing them NOW and then they will be out of the way when I DO start school.

Cristine... so nice to hear from you again!

Congratulations on your future Michael Phelps. And, yes, I agree with you. Years from now the weekend at Matthew's swim meet will be more memorable than a weekend tucked away at a conference.

Let's see... my week started off very sad. On Sunday, family members of dear friends I grew up had a horrible car accident. Aunt Judy passed away at the scene of the accident and Uncle David has severe hemoraging and lots of internal damage to his poor body. My update last night did not sound promising.

Monday night was not any better. I've been following the story of the premature birth of twin girls that are family members of a friend. One baby girl has grown and is healthy and at home with her parents. The other sweetie fought the valiant fight but lost the battle to stay with her family. It was absolutely heartbreaking for me to read the news on their CaringBridge site.

That's a lot of lemons. There isnt much for me to do in either situation other than keep these two families in my thoughts and prayers and appreciate all that I have in my life, especially our health.

I've drank a lot of koolaid in the last month though as the year of love has been very rewarding in July. His name is Chris. ;)

Work is a complete s#$%-show right now, my vacation was abbreviated because of it, and my little guy looked at me one night with tears in his eyes and said "Mommy, why do you work so much? I miss you!" Lemons. Big, fat lemons. Then, put of the blue last week, a friend of mine called that I had mentioned my job search to with an offer to come and "chat" with the company she works for. I went in today, and walked away with an offer. With my same salary. Benefits. A flexible work schedule. And autonomy to create my area. The Year of the New Job pays off!!! After all the resumes, cover letters, phone interviews, etc., I got a great job that I didn't even apply for! Better yet, I don't have to move to do it, and in the future, if we want to move, I can work remotely. Sweet, sweet lemonade.
