Try Bonding

Fun Fact: Growing up, my next door neighbor, Eddie, helped create the board game, Tribond. He and two friends came up with the idea while working long, hot summer days doing construction. I suppose it was their way of passing time.

The game challenges players to identify the specific relationship - bond - between three clues. Below are a few examples:

Queen, Drone, Worker. Answer: Bees.

Jazz, Heat, Sixers. Answer: NBA basketball teams

Bisque, Love, Fault. Answer: Tennis terms

I felt a little like I was playing Tribond last week as I met with students about their passions and visions for the future. They would tell stories about themselves and I would listen closely, trying to identify a specific relationship - bond - between their clues. Below are a few examples:

I am a take-charge-kind-of-person, I love traveling, I have experience working with people who have disabilities.

I was teased as a child, I lost a lot of weight in my teens, I am a certified fitness instructor.

I write poetry, I want to be an entrepreneur, I recently started a blog.

Notice that, unlike Eddie, my combinations of clues are not nicely and neatly followed by an answer. That is because, the game of life is harder than the game of Tribond. In Tribond, the relationship already exists and winning means you are better than your competition at deducing the puzzle's correct answer.

In life, there is not one correct answer and winning does not mean moving around the board faster than your peers. In life, winning means accurately inducing - in factproducing - a relationship between your life's purpose (contribution) and your talents, interests, and experiences.

How about you? Join us in the comment section and share at least three important things about you. Then start playing. Find a connection between the items you have listed and the contribution you would most like to make in the world.

Shining off until tomorrow...

    1 I easily take charge of things/events/groups
    2 I love teaching people
    3 I enjoy writing/blogging/pen pals/journalling

umm..I should teach a class on creative writing? Actually, I am teaching next week on ways to scrapbook "outside the box" that I am hoping will be informative AND fun for those that attend.

I find have more time to create here, and read & write and journal while out in nature. I find peace in those things and life as I knew it in Texas no longer allowed me the time to do any of those. I'm new here in Mississippi so I am unencumbered by expectations of others for me to lead them, to make things happen, etc so I have found more time to do the things *I* choose instead of things just dropped in my lap. My work schedule is different (1-10pm) than it was (8-5pm) so I have time in the mornings to make cards or just sit on the beach and RELAX. The pace is slower here, not as frenetic as Austin. It was a bit of an adjustment when I moved here 2/15 and I find it suits me well. There, an update of sorts on what I have been up to since Feb 2010. :-)

You want me to FIGURE IT OUT, I have no CLUE in my TRIVIAL PURSUIT in the game of LIFE. It BOGGLES my mind the SEQUENCE of events, even RISKS I take that seem to have a Domino effect in my search to find PERFECTION. It's as if a TWISTER sweeps in and creates a LANDSLIDE. SORRY! :0)

First things first. Peggy, your mind works in amazing ways. It is one of your talents and I love it.

Figuring out our life's purpose can feel a little like playing CHESS or CHECKERS. It's about setting strategy and creating a path so you can move forward. Peggy, continue with your groupings of three. In addition to words that describe you, add to your list things you like to do, dreams you have, moments when you are the happiest, and anything else that describes the essence of you.

Chaotic... thanks for the recap and, I might add, I think you are right on target with how your interests and talents can be combined to make a contribution. I am taking an art/journaling class that ends tonight and I have absolutely LOVED it. I actually met a woman this past week who is interested in starting something similar. I think there is a definite niche market for those kinds of experiences. How about shooting me an email at cbeeny@ckbgroup.com and sending me your new mailing address.

I'm creative- I like to paint and write. I'm sympathetic/empathetic to my own and others feelings (is that possible to be that towards yourself?). I like to be positive and encourage others to positive as well.

As a child, I was brutally shy but outgrow this trait a little bit more each year. I've learned that I can do anything I set my mind to. I like to try new things.

My contribution is to be creative and everyday is a challenge of how to find a way to share that creativeness. I can't help but think sometimes I missed a calling to be some type of teacher/mentor/counselor as I like to help others achieve their goals and dreams. I would like to inspire others to be their best and make their dreams come true while making my own dreams come true but sometimes my dreams are foggy as to what it is I truly do dream.

Completely random but I loved the movie, Mr. Holland's Opus. He fulfilled his purpose without even knowing he was fulfilling his purpose. Am I remembering that correctly?

I love to communicate with people...I'm never happier than when I'm sitting talking to someone about their story.
I, like Cheryl, love to challenge myself to try new things and force myself to grow.
I dream of finding true professional fulfillment though don't know if I am capable of ever being 100% satisfied with what is vs. looking towards what is next.

    Compassionate
    Dream big
    Active
I enjoy talking to others and learning more about anything. I am compassionate with those I work with, those I meet, and mostly my friends and family who I know well. I like to stay physically active and have either been in the fitness industry, teaching, performing or running/walking for personal health. I dream big and until recently, thanks to HOS, have discovered that I can dream big and put footsteps on the ground to make it happen, so to speak.
So, this, in the year I turn 50, I have learned that dreaming big, having compassion for others while staying active has given me a "tri-bond" role I can really sink my teeth into in helping others.
And yes, Cheryl, that movie was magnificent. He didn't know he was fulfilling his purpose, he was always trying to get ahead and make life better for his family by the choices he made in helping his students, and standing by them. :) Great movie - thanks for reminding me of that!
