Milestones

Of all the ways I could think to celebrate today's milestone of 1,000 blog posts, only one idea kept resurfacing.

Write another blog post.

Why, after all, would I change anything when the very cause for celebration is the chance to keep doing what I love?

And, with more time and more effort I could eventually log 10,000 hours of writing blog posts.

Why 10,000 hours?

Malcolm Gladwell is one of my favorite writers and a few years ago he wrote a chapter in Outliers, titled, "The 10,000-Hour Rule. The entire premise of his chapter is that, preparation plays a much larger role in the success of gifted people - outliers - than does innate talent. In fact, he sited work where researchers settled on what they believe is the magic number for someone to develop true expertise. It was ten thousand hours.

Since I am not gifted, the idea of Gladwell's 10,000-hour rule suited me just fine. After all, logging long hours of sheer hard work is something I know I can do.

And since the principle seems to have worked for people like Bill Joy, Bill Gates, The Beatles, and a whole slew of other people, I can't imagine why it wouldn't work for me too.

And you too!

So, what is something you love enough that you would consider doing it for 10,000 hours - which, incidentally, averages out to about twenty hours a week over ten years? Join me in the comment section and share.

Shining off until tomorrow when I come one day closer to Thursday, September 18, 2025 - the day I reach my 10,000 hours!

I love teaching! I'd love to spend 20 hours a week just teaching! Hopefully I'll get closer to that 20 hours a week when I start teaching a class next semester. However, for now, I like to think that I do lots of informal teaching.

in Taoism, the "10,000 things' stands for everything that exists. So 10,000 is a very powerful number in many ways. Keep up the good work and you'll be there before you know it.

If this is the Gage who I know and love and respect, THANK YOU for your comment today. I love the factoid about the number ten thousand and Taoism. It makes 10,000 hours seem that much more significant.

You made it- oh happy day!! :) And now, we get to keep on truckin'!

In a broad sense, my 10,000 is dedicated to creating. I've been doing it my whole life. From drawing pictures to painting sea shells as a child to drafting class and playing the french horn throughout my high school years to creating hall decorations for homecoming week to architecture classes in college to changing my major to art and taking painting, ceramics and design to writing my own blogs, creating PowerPoint presentations for work meetings to drawing Ray for HLA/HOS to jumping into acrylic painting. My 10,000 hours has been dedicated to creating.

Does my creating need to be honed and focused on one medium? Probably. If I could, would I change my past and nurture that sense of creativity with a more focused determination? Sure. But I can't and as George Elliot said, "It is never too late to be what you might have been." :-)

What a perfectly inspiring comment from Cheryl.

I agree when we look back at the lives we have lived to date, there is evidence that we have been logging hours at the things we love doing and are innately good at. None of us is a totally clean slate.

So maybe the better question is what do you love doing enough that you will continue logging your 10,000 hours?

I'm with Katie...I think teaching...or maybe even better listening and helping process peoples problems.
I probably logged 10,000 hours of dancing/colorguard when you consider 12 hour rehearsals for about 90 days every summer * 4 summers = about 4300...then add on top of that another 6 years of high school dance/guard and 5 years of teaching...
Yep I have to have exceeded the 10,000 hours!

I just hold my breath and hope for your sake that blogging is still around in 2025 and we haven't moved on to some new type of technology...Jack and Lily will be graduating high school!

Creating memories with my family and friends and dancing. I hope to add to the hours I have already logged over the years for many more. I love spending time with my family and friends. To me there is no greater gift than the gift of time. I hope to continue dancing into my older years with my husband. Someday we will log some hours learning the tango :). We just have to carve out the time. I am sooo excited tomorrow is Friday. It has been a long week. Have a great night HOS.
