Do You See What I See?

People often look at life through very different lenses. I have spent time lately thinking about the difference between those who live life like it's a competition and those who believe in abundance.

If I give my youngest son a compliment, the middle son chimes in wondering where his is. That is his competitiveness at play. Then I remind Matthew that there is an unlimited amount of talent in the world. Jack can be great at something and he, in turn, can be great at something entirely different. There is no cap on the amount of talent that can be cultivated in our lifetime.

Cheryl can win her office fitness contest without her colleague having to worry that it means she, herself, will never achieve her own fitness goals. There is no limit to how healthy each of us can become. Interpreting one person's success as your failure is nothing more than competitiveness getting in your way.

I can learn about not one, but two, other fabulous websites doing work very similar to the House of Shine and not have to worry that they are "beating" me.  In fact, I can chose to believe in abundance and tell myself two things: (1) there is an unlimited amount of cyberspace and creativity and, (2) the more people who write about shining, the more awareness we are raising.

The same is true of holidays. World Tuberculosis Day does not have to worry that it is also National Chocolate Covered Raisins Day. There is room for both. I can read and learn and appreciate how much work must be done to eliminate TB, while still enjoying the genius of chocolate covered fruit (though it is also true that I would rather have one than the other).

What kind of lenses are you wearing?

Shining off until tomorrow...

That is a really interesting question Claudia! I think the lenses I see life through are with abundance. However, there are times where that competitive spirit comes through with questions like am I accomplishing the goals I set myself or is there another approach I missed in order to achieve the best results? So that competitive spirit helps me re-direct the focus of my lenses, and oftentimes this past year, YOU have helped me refocus my lenses! I am so grateful! But I also think I may have to celebrate chocolate covered raisin day too! :)

I guess I have a different lens than either that you propose. I believe that what TYPE of competitive spirit you have determines whether you believe that there is abundance and whether you SHINE.
In my world I believe my competitive spirit helps me Shine (others may tell me something different). First and foremost I am ALWAYS happy when someone achieves something great. I'm proud of them and the work they put in and my first thought is to take the time to tell them that. My second thought then becomes, "How can I achieve that same thing or something like it." It drives me to be better without detracting from the other person's success.
I believe that some things come in abundance (compliments, internet space, wealth) while there are other things for which there MUST inherently be a competition (first place, a VP position at a University, a national award).

The importance thing is remembering our Shine Principal "KEEP PERSPECTIVE"! You have to remember that MOST of the time someone else's success ISN'T your failure but CAN give you the kick in the rear end you need to get your own ass in gear OR let you know you are in dead last and it is time to focus your energy on something you CAN shine at.

Now I for one say Chocolate Covered Raisins Day wins today!

I love the thought provoking comments already this morning. And Heather, thanks for brining us back to the concept of Keeping Perspective.

I think we are a pretty cool community.

Ah. I applaud you, Claudia. I agree. There is plenty of room in this world for SHINE. We do live in an abundant world. We can all have our dreams. All we have to do is WORK for them. You can visit any one of the 10 Shine Principles and apply it to having success at whatever you want to achieve. I don't know if it's because I'm part of this community that I recognize others using Shine more or not but I see it everywhere! I have a little sample lotion that says Shine. There's a 5K coming up soon that's called The Rise & Shine 5K. There's a Rise-N-Shine Donut shop in Arlington. Yahoo has a whole website dedicated to Shine. Heck, a guy that I went on date with in January that I now see on Match has his Username as: RiseandShine###!

Look, we didn't come up with the idea of Shining- it's been around as long as roosters have been crowing. We aren't the only website or organization that promotes being your best and creating community. We promote those concepts because we believe in them. Because we want to live a better life. Because we want our children to have a better life. Because we feel that special something inside of us - SHINE - that wants to give to others.

I think the principle that I recognize most in this scenario is:
Bring Out the Best in Others

You gals are all so 'deep' today.

In my younger days.... I used to view the world through rose colored lenses....a cheerful view to an excessive degree.... now that I am working outside the home.... again... I'm like on a yo-yo diet in the working world...I have been once again opened and exposed to so many different things in two short weeks. If you recall, I haven't been working outside the home since Dec. 2009.... I really like my 'own' troubles and life situations.... I really feel good about who I am and what I do... I've grown being home .... however, working with others really stimulates you... I can't articulate all that I have gained..... but people are amazing, interesting, odd and a challenge.

My reading lenses I think need to be stronger... so I can view the computer screen and the compassion screen just a wee bit better.

Peggy.. I think that is a pretty good articulation of what you have gained - insight into the fact that people are amazing, interesting, odd, and challenge.

I think that sums a lot of it up nicely.

In a week or so, I want to write a post talking more about how I think today's concept connects with Shine Principle #2 - Create.

I just lost my long version of this comment. Ugg! So, I will keep it short. As a young girl, I was competitive. I could hardly wait for competition season in high school. It was a high, a sense of accomplishment. Now that I am older, I am working daily to see things from a place of abundance. I enjoy a good race but I do not feel that I have to win to in order to feel accomplished. Winning a medal would be a nice bonus. Thank you Claudia for always making us think! As far as Chocolate Covered Raisins Day, I am out. I would however enjoy some Chocolate Covered Caramel, such as Rolos. Have you ever had frozen Rolos? They are soooooo good! We are off to celebrate Alanah's fifth birthday. Have a great evening HOS!
