Is That Ok?

I guess it's ok to celebrate Ok Day, the day the word "ok" showed up in print for the first time (172 years ago). The word has a few points of distinction, after all.

It's Universal. The word ok has been adapted to countless other languages including African dialects, Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, German, and Vietnamese to name a few.

It's versatile. According to Wikipedia, depending on context and inflection the word can have up to 7 different meanings. For example, you can use it sarcastically, as an exclamation, as a noun, or as a verb.

The word has a sense of humor. It is believed the word "ok" is an abbreviation of a misspelling "oll korrect."  Apparently a fad existed in the United States at the time the word originated. "Comical mispellings" were used and then formed into acronyms. Two other examples that didn't rise to the same prominence as OK were: K.Y. for "know yuse" ("no use") and N.C. for "'nuff ced."

It has a hand gesture. I can only think of one other expression in the English language that has an accompanying hand gesture and it certainly doesn't warrant a day of celebration.

It changes with the times: While Ok first entered print in 1839, it frequents all sorts of label buttons on modern day computers.

It has its own biography: Ranking right up there with Jefferson, Lincoln, and Churchill the word Ok has a published account of his life: OK: The Improbable Story of America's Greatest Word, Metcalf, Allan. (2011). Oxford University Press, Oxford.

Ok, now that I've touted many of the reasons Ok Day is worth celebrating, let me tell you my major beef with the word "ok".

Ok is only ok. It doesn't shine. By definition ok can, and will only ever mean, "adequate," "acceptable", or "mediocre." Nothing about the word "ok" implies excellence and, yet, that is the very foundation on which our beloved House of Shine stands.

The word "ok" deserves a little recognition I suppose, but is it ok that I'm letting it trump the celebration of National Puppy Day, Near Miss Day, World Meteorological Day, and Kick Butts Day?  Visit me in the comment section and help me feel ok about my decision.

Ok?

Shining off until tomorrow...

Ha! Ha! Ok- I read the post this morning on my iPod and I've been contemplating whether or not I should tell you what the OK sign means in sign language...

It's not as bad as the one finger salute that you reference in the post... but it's a cousin.

My boys know what it means and any time someone gives us the OK sign we giggle and say- "He just called me an @$$#01e!"

I know! I know! I'm a great example for a mother. Don't call CPS on me.

That's funny Cheryl that you brought up sign language. I was going to say... growing up my neighbors were deaf, husband and wife, they had two hearing sons near my age... they tried to teach me sign language.... I was fascinated when they were in an argument ... hands and fingers flying with distinct definition (the boys got in a lot of trouble, because of the parents disability)... you can tell they were mad! And now that you say that, just like in a foreign language ... you always gotta learn the dirty stuff... hee hee... I use 'thank you' the most briefly touching my lip and then opening my hand.....okie dokie smokey! or as the texters in my house say
    kkkkkkk!!!!

Now that you say that, Peggy, I have several friends that drop the "o" as well- k!

I always think of the cheerleaders, "Ready?, Okay!" I think it is all in the inflection as to whether the word shines. I mean if it really means Oll Korrect (All Correct) then that does shine.
Now Lily saying it in her little attitude-y way, "oookaayyy Mom" that doesn't shine one iota...nope!

We use to do a little think with Oh, Okay when I marched corps...not really sure where it came from or why we thought it was funny but we did.

I agree with Heather, it all depends on the inflection! I am guilty of a few "ooookayyy, Mom" statements in my day. :)

Ok, ok, ok, I see your points. Ok doesn't have to be relegated to meaning only mediocre. To Heather's point, I suppose if something is "Oll Korrect" than it is kind of like getting 100% on a test. And that would shine. Wouldn't it.

I'm starting to feel ok about my post.

I personally like the word. However, I don't agree with making it shorter when you text. OK! vs. K! It is only one letter and it takes a millisecond to type it. Give poor OK credit where credit is due :)...OK?

I will say that I too do not like it used with a roll of the eyes and sassiness. That I could do without.

It is crazy, pretty outside here today. I have Spring fever. Have a great day everyone!

    What about OK vs Okay?

    Hmm...

I have to go home and listen now to see if I'm getting the ok with attitude.

I prefer to hear it as Okay! I'm excited! Alright! Okay!

Yeah- typing it just isn't the same as saying it.

OK is definitely OK in a shine-y sort of way! If your medical tests come back OK. If your cupcakes come out of the oven OK. If your computer turns on each day and works - albeit slowly - that is ok! If you husband makes it home from work OK. If you are able to complete several projects at work during a hectic/manic day that is AOK! :) I love OK, and use okey-dokey quite a bit. OK has so many different variations to it and truly make you feel OK or AOK or okay. But I do agree with Heather and Katie K about the rolling of the eyes, head turning away and the big sigh oooookkkkkayyyy mom from my child! For the most part I think OK shines and it is truly OK! Honestly, Claudia with all the feedback about OK you should feel really OK about the post because it has generated some OK thinking out there!
