What's in a Name?

My name is Claudia.

My name, like yours, is one of the few things that has truly been with me since birth. Seven letters. Three consonants and four vowels. Uncommon enough that my name never came printed on any of the fun pads, cups, pens, and jewelry my friends had, but common enough that in the third grade, Claudia Swift sat three seats away.

I wasn't named after my mother or my father's mother who immigrated from Spain. My name wasn't handed down from a great grandmother or from the elder of a small village on the other side of the globe. It isn't rich in family history and it doesn't translate into something exotic like Graceful Bird or powerful like Wise Tiger.

But still, I have always loved knowing I was named after one of my father's favorite students. The way my dad tells it, Claudia was smart and interested. She was an "A" student.  She was curious, a good writer, and eventually she wrote for the school paper. In a word, what I think my dad meant to say was that Claudia Shined.

I bet most of your parents would say the same thing about your namesakes.  They Shined. The person after whom we were named possessed a quality that our parents admired. And by letting us share that name, they were by extension saying that we, too, will Shine.

I never met my dad's star student, but since this week is National Celebrate Your Name Week and today is National Namesake Day, I find myself thinking about her more. Are we anything alike? What did she go on to do with her life? How many more people, other than my dad, did Claudia make an impression on?

Does she have any idea that, because of the way she lived her life, there is another woman roaming the planet with her name?

I wonder.

And I wonder about you and your name. Do you have a namesake that you know of? What's his or her story? Were you named after strong and loving grandmother or a crazy uncle or the sibling of a parent who died young or your mother's favorite soap opera star? Celebrate National Namesake Day by visiting us in the Comment Section and telling us what you know about your name.

Shining off until tomorrow...

I'm extremely jealous of everyone who can celebrate Namesake Week. My name is not in honor of anyone. Alas, my Mom swore she was being extremely creative when she came up with my name...Heather Lynn. I was in grade school with 5 other Heathers and at least two other Heather Lynns. Creative indeed. And although I always liked to tease my Mom about the creativity I have to at least be thankful that I wasn't some made up name like we see a lot of these days.

This week instead I'll celebrate the namesakes of my girls. Each of their first names was just a name that we loved enough to agree on but each of their middle names is in honoring our Grandmothers who played huge roles in each of our lives. Lily FRANCES is after my grandma who got me through thick and thin and encourage and supported me my whole life. She was so much like Lily is turning out to be that I just have to smile. Sassy and STUBBORN!!
Charlotte REBECCA is after Bal's grandma who was a third parent to him. He used to sit up late with her since his parents worked 2nd shift. I only had the pleasure of meeting her a few times but one thing I remember vividly is that she too was SPUNKY! I remember once she and her roommate at the nursing home trying to figure out how they might get a cute male doctor to come into their room and who would need to complain about some ailment to make it happen.

So yes, this week I'll remember fondly my girls' namesakes and thank each of them for being a SHINING example to Bal and I about how we wanted to live our lives and who we want our girls to grow up to be.

This is a great post for our family, since it fits well.
I was named after my mom, but with a little twist - there's no "H" in Cristine. It was my dad's idea; he wanted me named after my mom (my mom wanted MaryBeth - glad dad won). So my mom and I had the same first name and our middle names and confirmation names were switched.

As for the boys - Matthew was named after Matt - big shocker - Matthew is a second- it's fun traveling with two guys with the same name - you should have seen us on the cruise - no the 6 year old's room card can't buy beer :) Plus their middle names are in honor of Matt's dad.

William's middle name is after my dad and my grandfather - Charles. It's nice to have a little something of my family carry on.

Glad to be able to participate in this fun post. I'm off to get kids ready for school. Have a great day everyone!

    Ohhh, I love this post!

The story I have always heard about my first name is that when I was born, my grandmother came into the room to see me for the first time and insisted that I be named Katherine. Katherine was her mother's name and she wanted her first granddaughter to be named after her mother. And so, there you have it, I was named Katherine. When my grandmother passed away a few short months ago, that was a story that I heard a million times- about how proud my grandma was that I was named after her mom. Still warms my heart now.

My middle name is the same as my mom's, grandma's, and great aunt's.

Nope, not named after anyone. No family member, no friend, not even a friend of a friend of some stranger. I guess my parents just liked the name. Cheryl. Bleh! When I introduce myself I always get, "Michelle?" No, Cheryl. "Carol" No, CHERYL! I must mumble or have a speech impediment! But, there weren't too many other Cheryl's in my school. None in my class but one ahead me and one behind me. I wasn't a Kristi, Amy or Jennifer to which there were several. :) My dad's second wife was Cheryl though- ah, good times those were. Moving on....

My boys have family names. Drew is named after his dad and grandad- Andrew Wesley, III. Both his dad and grandad go by Andy. I had a fit and said no way were we going to call this baby Little Andy. It was confusing enough with the 2. JB is named after my grandfather that I loved dearly. I spent a lot of time at my grandparents house growing up. My grandfather was just JB- something about records being lost.... long story... but his father was Frank Bowden and Frank's father was John Bowden- so, that's my JB.

Hello, I'm Peggy Sue... just like the Buddy Holly song from the 50s. My maternal grandmother's name is Margaret, my mom worked with a woman who had a daughter named Peggy. Peggy is my legal name. If you are over 45 and Catholic... many Margarets took the nickname Peggy (which is defined as Pearl)... they get the nickname from Margie, Maggie, Meggy, then Peggy. (but I'm not Catholic... just giving the background story)

I say legally, because when I signed some documents in Tennessee the lawyer handed me back the papers with a sigh and told me to sign my 'real' name... you know how James can be Jimmy, of Michael can be Mick or Mike... There was never another Peggy in my grade... a few older than me. I haven't yet to see Peggy as a comeback girls name for babies... and most Peggy's are a Margaret.

My maternal grandmother always spelled my name Peggie... which I thought was weird, why didn't my mom correct her. Cheryl gets a laugh every time she says my name because of that new commercial with the guy having an Indian accent, saying "hello, this is Peggy".... many people think I say Heidi...
my kids names have stories too, but that's for another time

    Peggy,

You have me laughing out loud!!! You are hilarious. I know exactly the commercial you are talking about and it always makes me smile.

This has been fun, so far. Let's hear more!

I was named after my great-grandmother Mollie Reed. My mom actually didn't like her very much, but she loved the name Molly. I am not sure why she changed it from -ie to -y, but likely because of her dislike for her grandmother.

So - our names are not always after someone who Shined...sometimes it's just a good name.

Inside everyone is a little shine, Molly. Even your great grandmother Mollie! She, after all, had your mother who in turn had you!

Either way, I agree. The name Molly is a good one.

Yes, I was named after one of my mom's college friends (roommate?) Karlene. I shortened it when I went in to stage and tv work as it seemed to suit. I have 2 other sisters and we all started with K's - Katharine, Karlene, Kristine and each of eventually shortened to Kathy, Karlie and Kristy.
My daughter Sophie Grace is named after my two great grandmothers. Since my older sister started having her family at a younger age, we had to pick names from the family tree and have 'dibs' on the names. So I chose Sophie and Benjamin. Kathy asked me two years ago if I would mind her taking the name Benjamin for her 10th child. What's a sister to do? Of course I said, go ahead!
