Peace Corp

The best part about living at the House of Shine is that everywhere you look there is something so shiny it demands celebration.

This month we joined forces with www.brownielocks.com and challenged ourselves to identify one either fun, serious, or traditional, holiday from her long list and to use it as the prompt for writing our daily post.

There were quite a few to chose from this March 3, 2011, including dates such as: National Anthem Day, I Want You To Be Happy Day, International Sister Cities Day, and What if Cats and Dogs had Opposable Thumbs Day?

None stood out as deserving attention from the House of Shine more than Peace Corps Day.

How do you resist the urge to celebrate an organization whose mission includes three simple, but selfless goals: (1) provide technical assistance, (2) help people outside the United States to understand the U.S. and, (3) help Americans understand the cultures of other countries? It was, after all, the Peace Corp that President Kennedy was referencing when he made the famous statement, "And so, my fellow American's: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country."

The very essence of this organization which has now been around for fifty years embodies so many of our Shine Principles: Create, Use Your Strengths, Keep Perspective, Realize the Impact of Little Things, Bring Out the Best in Others, and Spread Shine to name a few.

In celebration of this important American force for good, I say the following hoping that you will find a way to make a difference today:

And so, my fellow House of Shiners: ask not what your corner of the world can do for you - ask what you can do for your corner of the world."

Shining off until tomorrow...

    Happy Peace Corp day!

It's such a beautiful day and I've had some nice conversations with friends at work this morning. Looking forward to an awesome day! :)

I agree Cheryl...a BEAUTIFUL day and I love that it is Peace Corps Day. Sometimes I wish I would have done something so bold when I was young and unrestricted by life.

Like Heather, I also wish I would have done something so amazing when I was younger and had less responsibilities and obligations. So often our obligations keep us from shining outside of our corner of the world. So when I can't, I try to shine brightly in my home and show my kids how to shine.

Good afternoon everyone. Ditto to the other three Texans who commented this morning. The weather is perfect - 70s and sunny, sunny, sunny.

That makes three of us. In retrospect, I think I would have loved joining the Peace Corp. Actually, let me rephrase. I think I would have been worried about the living conditions in a third world country, but I am fairly certain I would have LOVED the experience of getting to know the people of another culture.

Who knows, though, what kinds of opportunities might present themselves as our kids get older and eventually move out of our houses. There could be something great and adventurous on the horizon.

I'm going to be honest when I say that I'm not sure I could have ever made it in the Peace Corps. I think it takes a truly dedicated person to completely change their lifestyle and take on a life of true service to others. I like to think that I take on a role of service to others each day, but not in the same way a member of the Peace Corps does. Whenever I work with a student who is interested in that opportunity or meet a co-worker who has been in the Peace Corps, I am constantly in awe of their dedication.

I'm off to figure out how I can help others!

Beautiful day! And beautiful organization The Peace Corp. I agree with Katie and Cheryl, I don't think I would have made it. I love technology - mostly AC if I may be so selfish. I assisted a friend from our church who is on her way back to VA - 2 months after her husband passed away, to now be with her dad. She is a strong woman but very saddened by so much loss. I hope to have brightened her day a little. I still have a couple more corners to get to - so have a great evening!

I could never have made it in the Peace Corp. Although I wanted to join the service when I was 18. I think it would be great if every student would have a choice of giving back through community service, armed services or the Peace Corps as a college requirement... or some sort credited program...if you remember, we highlighted a YEP, nominee a young man who was in the Peace Corp for two years working in the Medical field.

Yikes! I started a job outside the home today.... 'just' data entry....stay tuned. Aaack!
I haven't worked outside the home since Dec 19, 2009....so many mixed feelings!

Good luck to you, Peggy. Data entry is a perfect fit for you, because it requires someone detail oriented. Now you have a whole new corner in which to spread your shine. Lucky them.
