Recycle, Reuse, Remember

We have a large cabinet in our garage at home labeled, Imagination Station and it is chock full of old egg cartons, paper towel rolls, old buttons, and anything else that I think might come in handy when the kids get the inkling to build and create.  We had four snow days last week and, so as you can imagine, Imagination Station was open for business.

Matthew and I decided to put a dent in the more than forty toilet paper rolls I have acquired over time and to turn them into valentines for his classmates.  I will remember the peaceful afternoon we sat together at the kitchen table talking and doing crafts and I hope he will too.  Follow along and see how easy they were to make.

Select festive tissue paper.  We picked reds and pinks, but you could use pastel colors if you wanted to make some for spring.

Of course you will need Mod Podge and a paint brush, both of which can be found at any craft store.

Brush the Mod Podge onto your toilet paper roll.  Then, place a piece of tissue paper on top and gently re-brush Mod Podge over the tissue paper.  The beauty of this project is there is no wrong way to do it.  The paper can go any which way and, even if there are wrinkles in the paper, it still looks decorative.

Have faith.  No matter how covered in white Mod Podge the roll looks when you are brushing it on, it will dry and the colors will appear vibrant.

Fill with colored Krinkle and treats.

We rolled the tubes in cellophane and then used red and purple ribbons to seal each end.

Matthew's Valentine's party is on Monday and I know he is excited for his friends to receive them.  He has already presented one to his babysitter, Jenny, and it was a hit.

Before shining off until tomorrow, I must say that today's post is compliments of Cheryl.  In a true pinch, late last night, she agreed to embed my photos for me.  No small task.  Thank you, Cheryl, for offering to help and for epitomizing what it means to Shine.

Now... by the time you read this I will be shining off until tomorrow, from the Sunshine State.

I'm glad I was able to help!

Those are adorable and I just have to say that cellophane completes them so well!

My boys are handing out Fun Dip Valentine's. Not personal. Not homemade. JB may have gotten into a project but Drew has no interest at all making anything homemade so I'm sure he would have distracted JB and I would have been making 42 Valentine's so.... Fun Dip it is. :)

I'm trying to become a satirist:
Nothing wrong with Fun Dip.... for some, the homemade stuff is wonderful!!!! but having been there and done that.... no kid on the receiving end appreciates the time and effort of a 'homemade' valentine. They want the 'good stuff'.... and if the homemade valentine makes it home.... that's a big IF.... the stressed out working mom with sweat on her brow....searching through her kids Valentine mailbox, scrunched in the bottom of his backpack.... 5 days after the party.... will go... who made that???? His mom has too much time on her hands.... hhrumph.......

I showed my kids their old Valentine Books...(part of my comment yesterday) which they had tons of fun making 10 years ago..... Kyle's reaction... so? what do you want me to do with it? Holly thought 'it's cute' and went back to texting her friend... can you say de-flated.

But in ALL seriousness.... these tubular candy holders are quite adorable!!! I think the pictures are great too! The endless possibilities to use this same idea for: birthday favors (or even the invitation) , use orange tissue and green cellophane and make them into carrots for Easter favors, 4th of July, Halloween... baby showers.... stuff candy, trinkets from the $ store.... love the inspira-sh!ne.

I am sitting on the plane (still) waiting for take-off. I think the only real reason to do a craft, instead of a store bought valentine, is because it is fun for you and your kids. No one will appreciate the time it took, but you appreciate the time you got to spend with your children.

At the end of the day we do those kinds of things because we enjoy them.

Have a good day everyone and thanks again to Cheryl for helping out in a pinch.

I really do love making Valentine's with the girls and these are so cute! However, since the last two weeks have been so funky (weather and such) I went with the store bought version this time. They were happy, loved writing them and I got some work done :).

I am so excited about going to Krispy Kreme tomorrow to up some of those adorable donuts for the girls and their classmates...well for me too ;).

    Have a happy day everyone!

Too funny, Peggy! Typical kid response. And, you're so right! It could be done for any theme. :)

Misty- click on the link that says gravatar by the email address entry line. That will take you to a site called Gravatar. You have to create an account with them and upload a photo. It's free. And painless.

You guys kill me. There are no crafts in my house. The boys would probably just end up making a giant mess. Maybe if they could make some lightsabers, swords or guns it might spark their interest.
We are store bought. But I got some deals. I know my friends will love the flutes. (at least they aren't in my house)
No food can be given out or homemade items. Some crazy lawyer must have done something to enforce that rule (I really do like my fellow lawyers-that's why I'm not one anymore)

It's been a long day and a Large glass of wine is in order.

Ps keep your fingers crossed for me. I have a special meeting on Monday. It will hopefully bring some good news.

    Good night!
